What has The Ferret been up to in April?

Hi ,

A year ago this coming month, we launched our crowdfunding campaign. Thanks to your support, we raised over £10,000 to fund round two of our flagship series, Who Runs Scotland.

Time has flown, and your trust and support for our work has powered some major investigations. We’ve revealed that some of Scotland’s most iconic industries, like whisky and farmed salmon, are not Scottish-owned. We also discovered that nearly a third of our national newspapers are registered in the same US tax haven.

The series wraps up next week, and there’s still time to catch up if you’ve missed any of our reports. All of our Who Runs Scotland stories are free to read, thanks to the crowdfunder and the ongoing support of our members.

If you'd like to help us keep digging, you can become a member of The Ferret for just £5 a month or make a one-off donation. You'll be directly supporting the next round of investigations — and as you'll see below, our recent work is already making an impact.

Reporting on deaths in state care 🕯️

We were pleased to see our reporting referenced in Glasgow University’s latest report on deaths in state custody, which was published this week. The report cites our work on the number of young people who have died while in care, and the many investigations we have conducted over the past few years.

This is a subject we remain committed to covering.

Since we reported on the death of Jordan Burns in Addiewell prison earlier this year, his mother has received a letter from Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain, via her MP Fulton MacGregor, confirming that the Crown Office’s Custody Deaths Unit is investigating the circumstances of his death. We’ll continue to follow this story.

We’re also grateful to the other families who’ve been in touch since we published that piece. If you know of other cases involving deaths in state custody, and believe they deserve scrutiny, we’d encourage you to reach out.

Shining a light beyond The Ferret 🔦

Our investigations continue to inform wider discussions and reach new audiences.

In a column for The Scotsman on social media and the far-right, Dr Paul Reilly, a senior lecturer at the University of Glasgow, referenced our reporting on how far-right groups in Scotland used the August riots to recruit new members online.

Some stories take months, even years, to see change — but that’s why The Ferret exists. We’re here for the long haul, following up on issues, exposing wrongdoing, and giving a platform to voices that might otherwise be ignored.

Your support — whether as a member, a donor, or a reader — makes this possible. Thank you for being part of our community. Together, we’re proving that independent journalism has the power to make a difference. Join us today — become a member, make a one-off donation, or subscribe to our free newsletter.

See you next month,

The Ferret team
