Hi ,

As June comes to a close, we’re marking an important milestone: The Ferret has joined the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) — the world’s leading association of nonprofit newsrooms committed to investigative journalism.

GIJN supports investigative reporting around the globe through training, resources, and collaboration. We're proud to be part of a global community working to hold power to account and shine a light on underreported issues.

As always, your support makes this possible. And as you’ll see below, our journalism continues to have impact — from informing public conversations to being cited by leading commentators and picked up by other media outlets.

Reporting on refugee women 🕊️

We’re pleased to share that Ferret co-founder and co-editor Billy Briggs was shortlisted in the Independent Media category at this year’s Refugee Festival Scotland Media Awards.

His article, Torture charity asks governments to better protect women from violence, explored the experiences of refugee women who have survived torture and domestic abuse. You can read the full story here.

Ahlam Souidi, a community development worker at Freedom from Torture's centre in Glasgow, speaking with a refugee called Sana. Ahlam is seated on a couch in a cozy, decorated room, with Sana, who is wearing a light-coloured hijab. The background includes vibrant artwork and a traditional purple dress on display.

Informing public discourse 🛢️

In a recent opinion piece, former First Minister Humza Yousaf called on the UK Government to block the proposed Rosebank oil field, raising concerns that profits could flow to a company linked to human rights violations.

Yousaf referenced reporting by The Ferret, which in 2022 revealed that Ithaca Energy’s parent company was on a UN blacklist for activities in the West Bank, and last year uncovered its links to the Israel Defense Forces.

Our journalism making noise 📣

Several of our recent stories have gained attention from other media outlets.

The Highland Times picked up our report revealing that Kate Forbes, as rural affairs secretary, intervened to stop the planned release of beavers into Glen Affric, citing concerns about local support for the project.

Our investigation into external affairs secretary Angus Robertson’s decision to withhold minutes from a meeting with the Israeli ambassador — due to fears they could be perceived as antisemitic — was reported by The National, the Express, and the Morning Star.

What’s next?

We’ll keep investigating where others won’t — from the far right to environmental policy, from lobbying to public land and property. And as always, we’re in it for the long haul.

Your support — whether as a member, a donor, or a reader — makes this work possible. If you want to help us keep digging, you can join The Ferret for just £5 a month, make a one-off donation, or forward this newsletter to a friend who might be interested.

Thank you.

Yours,

The Ferret team
