Hi ,

We might be a media coop but sometimes we're all about the money.

So over the last year or two, we’ve been paying close (er) attention to how money flows in and out of Scotland and exploring how it shapes our politics, public finances, land and property ownership, and our international reputation.

The Money Trail, as we call this series, has so far led to 18 stories – one of which even caught the eye of author Irvine Welsh – and we have many more in the works.

Speaking of which, the latest is out this Sunday.

Spoiler alert: It involves secretive corporate owners taking full advantage of some exotic (and tax efficient) places, broken promises of Scottish investment, and a whole wad of our taxpayer money.

Nice work if you can get it. We'll stay on the trail.

Yours,
Jamie
Story of the week
An in-depth look at a Ferret investigation
On one side of Nina’s bright living room, life is flourishing. Plants line the large window, green and verdant. But on the other side, where a small memorial has been set up, time has frozen.

Nina's son David had been in permanent foster care for years when, still a young teen, he took his own life. Nina says culture bias in the child protection system ripped her family apart.

This is a complex case. But grassroots organisations say her claims of racial bias are part of a pattern, linked by two reports launched in recent months.

The Ferret and Migrant Women Press investigated Nina's story as part of a cross-border project looking at longstanding and widespread fears of racial bias, not just in Scotland and the UK, but across Europe.
