Hi ,

In 20 years, Scotland will have reached Net Zero...Well, that's the plan anyway.

But how are we going to get there?

Since the 1970s North Sea oil has been part of the Scottish psyche. Our latest series – After Oil – will look at how we move to a greener future.

What will the energy transition mean for people across Scotland?  Who is pulling the levers of power? What role does big business play? What will be the impact on workers and jobs? And despite the political promises, which communities risk being left behind?

We start this Sunday in Grangemouth, almost six months since the oil refinery closure.

We're also taking our Open Newsroom format on tour, visiting towns and cities across the country to discuss what we should be covering and how we should be doing it. First up is Aberdeen so please join our editorial meeting there on Wed, 17 September. Tickets are free!

Meanwhile we've been busy digging into the influence of the far right, fact checking Nigel Farage and launching a new training project to help young people fight disinformation.

There's never a dull moment at Ferret towers.

Yours,

Karin

An in-depth look at a Ferret investigation

Far right accused of racism, threats and attacks at anti-migrant protests

Standing in front of a shop selling Polish produce in Aberdeen, John Carr held a microphone on a hot August day and addressed those gathered at the refugee protest.

“Hundreds of thousands of white girls have been raped by Pakistani rape gangs” he said in a speech littered with claims associated with far right conspiracy theories. He claimed that “old women live in fear surrounded in occupied neighbourhoods, filled with vengeful, violent foreign ‘third-worlders’”.

“British children are left to fend for themselves in schools overrun with brutal and hateful third-worlders (sic)”, he continued, while the public faced “pointless” covid-19 lockdowns when politicians, according to him, merely “bent the knee to black conquest”.
