Hi ,

This week we’ve been sharing our brand new series of investigations, which is a major project co-published with The Herald called Are Councils Working?

We took a deep dive into local government and democracy to highlight issues around public services, diversity, debt and council tax. Please see below for what’s already been released, but please note there’s more to come in the next couple of days - so keep an eye out for our exclusives.

There are many topics we need to be probing at the moment - including the potential of Indy Ref 2 next year and the climate crisis - and we’ll be back to covering a varied mix of topics next week.

Would you like to read the whole series without hitting the paywall? Become a member for £5 a month and get access to all of our investigations and series.

Thank you for supporting The Ferret, and helping us make journalism that changes things for the better - from the local to the global.

Warm wishes,
The Ferret
What did we dig up this week?
Nosing up the trousers of power
Should local councils be able to use agency cleansing workers?

Last week's question

Is your local council delivering the services needed in your community?

More on councils...
Glasgow City Council has spent almost £10m on agency workers to empty bins and deal with recycling in the last five years, we can reveal.
'Eye-watering' interest payments on borrowing from the UK treasury are further squeezing council budgets, campaigners have argued.
Scotland’s councils have been criticised for spending millions on media and marketing firms instead of investing funds in staff and public services.
