Hi ,

With less that two weeks to go until the US election, there has been controversy about party activists from the UK campaigning for Democrat candidate Kamala Harris. But it's not just the Labour Party doing it, a certain Scottish political figure is also using his influence across the pond.

Picture the scene: You're an undecided voter in a US swing state, perhaps Pennsylvania.

It's 5.30pm, and you sit down after a hard day's work to mull over the latest news and finally decide which candidate you'll place your trust in for the next four years.

There's a knock on the door, and you walk over to open it.

Who should appear in front of you but the Scottish Lib Dems leader Alex Cole-Hamilton!

Starstruck but attentive, you listen to his impassioned speech on why you should choose Kamala Harris instead of Donald Trump.

Convinced, you head to the polling station and vote for the Democrat candidate. She wins by just one vote and ushers in four years of liberalism.

The Ferret will never try to persuade you who to vote for, but we will give you some excellent journalism no matter who wins in November.

Yours,

Ali

Story of the week

An in-depth look at a Ferret investigation

The Ministry of Defence has blocked the Scottish Government’s environmental watchdog from releasing information about radioactive pollution from the Clyde nuclear bomb bases for the last nine years.

Emails released under freedom of information (FoI) law reveal that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) asked the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) not to publish information about “environmental issues with radioactivity” at Faslane and Coulport near Helensburgh to protect “national security”.

In response to FoI requests from The Ferret, Sepa has refused to release more than 20 files about radioactive problems at the bases since 2016, and redacted others. We have appealed to the Scottish Information Commissioner, David Hamilton.
